Camosun College recognizes that your name is important and we support that many members of its community may choose to use a name other than their legal name to identify themselves.
You can set as well as review your chosen name using myCamosun. The following article, will review how students and employees can update their chosen name.
Please note: The College reserves the right to remove any chosen name that is deemed to be inappropriate, derogatory, or misrepresentative (e.g., is being used in an attempt to avoid legal obligations or confuse one's identity with that of another). Those who intentionally misuse the chosen name option may be subject to disciplinary action through either Academic or Non-Academic Misconduct as well as the Acceptable Technology Use and Standards of Conduct policies.
Name Change Timelines
Please be advised, that updating your display name to use your chosen name is an automated process and that updates to your chosen name may take up to 3-4 days for our systems to fully update. For Microsoft Teams, as an example, you may have to sign-out, quit and restart the application to clear the cache to ensure your name is updated.
How to set your chosen name
1. Signing into myCamosun.
2. Click on your Camosun ID Number in the user profile area.
3. Select "User Profile" from the drop down menu
3. Review the notice in the About Me section
4. Click Edit Personal Identity

The following guidelines should be followed when setting your chosen name:
- Chosen last name must be set (and can be set with your Legal last name) if a chosen first name is provided.
- If you have only one name, chosen last name must be set.
- Personal pronouns and select special characters should not be added to the chosen name fields*

Why are you making this change?
This change is being made for several reasons. Primarily Camosun College recognizes and supports that many members of its community may choose to use a name other than their legal name to identify themselves. Additionally, this change supports a number of identity management initiatives to improve IT service delivery.
Where is a display name shown?
A display name is the name that is generally seen when a person signs into a computer, system or uses an app.
Do I need to set my chosen name?
No. If you choose not to set your chosen name your legal name will be used as the default display name.
How do I set my chosen name correctly?
The following guidelines should be followed when setting your chosen name:
- Chosen last name must be set if a chosen first name is provided.
