Windows 10 to Windows 11 Rollout

Windows 11 is here!

IT Service Delivery, Information Technology Services

This newest version of Microsoft Windows operating system will provide enhanced security; performance; new features and an overall improved user experience.

We are planning this necessary upgrade to all eligible devices to Windows 11 prior to the Fall of 2025 (when Microsoft ends support for Windows 10).

We have deployed Windows 11 in all student labs and on qualifying employee devices on a voluntary basis.

As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance performance, security and user experience, we will begin automatically upgrading qualifying devices from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

What to Expect:

  • Upgrade can be performed only while device is connected to campus wired network.
  • The upgrade process will start completely automatically with a silent installation, allowing you to continue using your computer during most of the installation time without any interruptions.
  • Upgrade process may take between 60 minutes and several days, depending on hardware and network loads. Please don’t be surprise that it won’t happen overnight
  • Once the system is ready for the final switch to Windows 11, you will receive a notification on your computer that it needs to be restarted. This restart will be a long one (15 to 30 minutes) and computer may restart multiple times to complete the upgrade. Please don’t power off your device during this process.
  • You may choose to initiate the final restart at your convenience, preferably after business hours.

Important Notes:

  • Remote upgrade through VPN or at campus via Eduroam WiFi is not supported.
  • All your data and applications will be preserved during the upgrade, but we recommend to backup your personal files.

If you encounter any questions, feel free to contact Camosun College ITS Service Desk by email itsservicedesk@camosun.ca or by phone at 250-370-3064.

Camosun Desktop Screen

Start Menu and Task Bar

Apps will show in a popup when you press the Windows key or click on the Windows icon in the taskbar.
Note: the taskbar cannot be moved from the bottom of the screen as in older versions of Windows.

To find an app not displayed in the Start menu, look for dots indicating more apps are available to scroll through. If it's still not found, use the Search bar to locate it. Once found, apps can be opened, pinned to the Start menu, or the task bar for easy access.

File Browser

The menu bar now has icons for many functions that used to require a right click.  These icons are also shown at the bottom of the new right click pop up.
